Yesterday, i was late to class, i hadn't got out from house when my friend called and told me that class was all ready to start. So i gave up attending and because i've dressed properly and it's such a waste to change into pj again, i got out and went to markas sihhi (health centre). I could've gone to pharmacy for antihistamine, but mehh 9am pharmacies don't open yet. Besides, i can get mc by going to markas sihhi and i'm insured so off i went. i was sick in the first place, so this did not count as malingering muahaha. not "sick" sick, but sick enough i couldn't sleep the night before because of extreme nasal congestion, and my throat felt so dry because i breathed by mouth.
all went well except...
the antihistamine is not the usual loratadine or diphenhydramine. it's triprolidine combined with pseudoephidrine and paracetamol. triprolidine is a 1st gen antihistamine, and my shallow pharmacological knowledge informed me that this is not good, it's less selective so more sedation. more sedation to my already always-sedated state, this freaks me out. so i medscaped the drug (triprolidine), and to my horror, they labeled it "discontinue". I don't really get what they mean by that, maybe discontinue as triprolidine per se, maybe discontinue at all means, but i'm not taking this drug!
I did google it more, it's relatively safe drug (combination of triprolidine and pseudoephidrine) but i'm not convinced.
So for this bout of severe nasal congestion, i didn't take any drugs at all. i just drank a hell lot of water because of the sore throat, and a pile of tissues to blow the nasal secretion away. and 3 pillows to sleep.
and magically, i'm so much better now. i can breathe with my nose! yay!
btw, i'm still disappointed i didn't get loratadine/diphenhydramine when i went to clinic. those drugs, i need them to be always available, the season is coming, when my eyes are dry and redder than a vampire, and nose keeps secreting watery discharge and so itchy i wish i could take it off, scrub it then put it back.
on different note, i have exam next wednesday and this is the first time as a medical student i can't wait for the exam. it's not like i'm fully prepared, it's just that i can't wait to be done with this rotation. last week and next week, my round is in asylum, enough said. new discovery: me and asylum doesn't suit well. paeds ward suits me better than asylum. please pray for me so i'll pass this rotation, thank you.
ps: dear eni the soon-to-be pharmacist, your advice on triprolidine please :)
